1st Southwater Cubs Go Caving

Also a few more comments below from other participants:
" It was an amazing experience. Scary at times but still lots of fun". (Sam Clark - Cub)

"It was great to see the excitement, mixed with a little apprehension, on the Cubs faces when we all arrived. Once everyone was changed into the caving overalls and helmets it was time to set off for the subterranean quarry.

The first obstacle was the vertical ladder down into the cave. This was the first point when I thought "what am I doing!" Once underground we proceeded into the tunnels ably escorted by our expert guides. As we made our way further into the maze of tunnels we learnt about the history of the quarry. Personally I found it very thought provoking to see the marks left by the workers pickaxes as they worked so hard to extract the stone hundreds of years ago. What must it have been like to work in those conditions!
There were a few tighter spots to navigate through. The worst "what am I doing!" moment came at the seemingly endless section constructed from concrete which was poured into a hole discovered whilst constructing the M23.
After retracing our steps back to the entrance we exited the tunnels and there was time to reflect on the 3 hours that we spent underground. What a fantastic experience for the leaders and cubs alike! We were very proud of how the Cubs took it all in their stride. There were plenty of laughs, great team work and encouragement between all of the group when needed. Another fantastic 1st Southwater Sea Scouts event!
Would I do it again? Definitely! Here's to a return visit next year! " (Mike Clark, dad, Beaver Leaders and soon-to-be Cub Leader).

2. You adopt a new family that never stops extending.
‘They are not like my parents, they are like brothers and sisters to me.’ – Kamil

3. When you don’t feel like you’re good enough, there are people around you who think you’re the best!

‘He is amazing! He is always coming up with great ideas and is full of energy.’ - Tim

8. You become more than a volunteer, you become somebody’s mentor.
‘They give us advice and lots of cool opportunities’- Sofia

9. You develop relationships that stand the test of time.
‘My old Cub Leader is one of the most important people in my life, we have some of the most incredible memories at camps, coffee catch ups and so on. She’s someone that’s always filled with energy and wants the kids and herself to have so much fun! She’s simply incredible, I love her to the moon and back.’- Caitlyn

This is what Scouting is about

This message was sent to a Beaver leader recently.

Hi all,
I just wanted to say a big thank you from my husband and I for looking after our son last night.
It was his first time without his best friend.  Our son was very worried about being by himself, and quite reluctant to go.
My husband described how our son was looked after by you all and the other Beavers.
He burst through the door on his return, with a huge grin on his face, and is so very proud of his scarf and badge and certificate. In fact he has refused to take the scarf off, slept in it, and is still wearing it!
This is our first experience of Beavers. It has been so positive and we are so very grateful for all you have done.
You made a small boy very happy.

Thank you.

What a great feeling!
